Starter cultures (and derivatives)

Effective from 23 December 2020

There has been a recent taxonomic reclassification of the genus Lactobacillus into 25 genera, including 23 novel genera. Following a review, the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (the department) have identified an additional seven genera that contain commercially important microorganisms:

  • Lacticaseibacillus spp.
  • Lactiplantibacillus spp.
  • Latilactobacillus spp.
  • Lentilactobacillus spp.
  • Levilactobacillus spp.
  • Ligilactobacillus spp.
  • Limosilactobacillus spp.

The department will be amending the legislation to include the additional genera in the approved starter cultures list. Until the legislation is amended these genera can be imported as included in the Lactobacillus genus.

Who does this notice affect:

Importers of starter cultures (and derivatives), importers of enzymes derived from starter cultures, Assessment Services Group and Inspections Group.
