Sunflower kernel or seed for human consumption

Effective from 24 July 2019

The department has revised the import conditions for both hulled and unhulled sunflower seed for human consumption to add germination testing (offshore and onshore). Processing at an Approved Arrangement class 3.0 has also been added for unhulled sunflower seed. The import conditions have separated into different import scenarios for clarity.

The department has changed the onshore options for onshore methyl bromide fumigation to allow the fumigation to occur prior to inspection.

Any importer who wants to use this option and has a valid permit must apply for a variation to their permit. The variation of the permit will cost $240 ($120 for the application fee and $120 for the assessment fee).

Who does this notice affect:
Assessment Services Group, Inspections Group, Importers and Brokers of sunflower seeds or kernels

Background:
The department has reviewed policy and determined that onshore and offshore seed germination testing and processing at an Approved Arrangement site class 3.0 are acceptable risk mitigation measures for hulled and unhulled sunflower seeds.
