Cell lines

Effective from 6 May 2019

The department has made changes to the cell lines BICON case.

Who does this notice affect:
Importers of cell lines, Assessment Services Group, Inspection Services Group.

Background:
The department has finalised a review of cell lines. As a result of the review some changes have been made.
These changes include:

  1. Simplifying the BICON pathway.

  2. Requiring evidence that the goods meet the import conditions.

  3. Changing the standard permit for cell lines from laboratory animals and humans to laboratory animals, insects and humans.

  4. Aligning the list of laboratory animals to legislation i.e. laboratory animals are guinea pig, hamster, mouse, rabbit and rat.

  5. Changing the standard permit for cell lines from non-laboratory animals to include animal species that were previously included in the standard permit for cell lines from Laboratory animals and humans.
