Changes

Captive non-human primates

Effective from 2 June 2017

This notice provides clients of the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (the department) notification of changes to the import permit conditions for non-human primates.

What is the change?

The updated conditions include that:

  • the country freedom requirement for yellow fever has been removed; the risk for this disease is considered to be managed by Australia's general biosecurity controls for zoo animals

  • the premises freedom requirements for hepatitis B, measles, simian haemorrhagic fever and simian immunodeficiency syndrome have been removed; the risk for these diseases is considered to be managed by Australia's general biosecurity controls for zoo animals

  • all testing for tuberculosis has been moved to the pre-export period and the premises freedom requirement has been reduced from five years to two years to be consistent with the recommendations in the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Terrestrial Animal Health Code.

What does this mean for my imports?

The requirements should be easier to meet and reflect current best practice for these species and diseases of interest.
