Effective from 5 December 2019

The 'Mixed seed for sowing (permitted species)' case has been amended to revise the scope of Brassica seed species that are permitted for importation under this case.

The following Brassica species can no longer be imported under the conditions within the 'Mixed seed for sowing (permitted species)' case:

Any requests to import the above species as a mixed seed consignment must be directed to the department for a further assessment.

Permitted species of Brassica that are not listed above can continue to be imported as a mixed seed for sowing.

Who does this notice affect?

This notice affects clients of the Department of Agriculture who import mixed seed for sowing.

Background:

In September 2019, the department published the final review of import conditions for brassicaceous vegetable seeds, please visit [http://www.agriculture.gov.au/biosecurity/risk-analysis/plant/brassicaceous-crop-seeds].

This review recommended that additional biosecurity measures must be applied to the following imported seed species and their synonyms: Brassica rapa (e.e. turnip and bok choy), Raphanus sativus (e.g. radish) and Eruca vesicaria (e.g. rocket). These measures are required to manage the risk of fungal pathogens (Colletotrichum higginsianum and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. raphani) that are of biosecurity concern to Australia.
