Changes to the import conditions for starter cultures (and derivatives)

Effective from 10 June 2021

The requirement that derivatives of approved starter cultures can only be primary derivatives has been removed.

The conditions now inform stakeholders that approved starter cultures or their derivates may be on the following animal derived carriers:

  • lactose
  • less than 10% dairy (without added water), (other than lactose)
  • less than 10% egg (without added water)
  • commercially prepared gelatine.

Who does this notice affect:

Importers of starter cultures (and derivatives), Assessment Services Group and Client Contact Group.

Background:

The import conditions for starter cultures (and derivatives) for human consumption, human therapeutic and cosmetic use has been updated to align with legislation and to provide clarity about animal derived carriers.
