Natural fibres (and their derivatives) of animal origin

Effective from 25 November 2021

The department has made changes to the import conditions for Natural fibres (and their derivatives) of animal origin.

  • Treatment conditions:
    Reference to gamma irradiation treatment at 50kGy has been replaced with treatment with ionising radiation at a level that achieves a minimum absorbed dose of 50kGy.
    Note: gamma irradiation is a type of ionising radiation and is still permitted.
  • End use conditions:
    End use conditions have been clarified in all pathways.
  • Import conditions:
    Import conditions for commercially manufactured and fully finished goods made from animal hair, fibre, or bristles (other than from sheep, goats, or camelids) have been changed to allow for the goods to be inspected on arrival if:

    • documentation is unable to be provided, or
    • the documentation provided is insufficient to demonstrate that the goods meet import conditions.

    These changes do not apply to goods imported for human or animal grooming or use as/in animal foods and fertilisers.
