Rice for human consumption or processing

Effective from 6 December 2019

The import conditions for non-viable rice (Oryza spp.) and wild rice (Zizania palustris or Z. aquatica) have been changed for the mail and passenger pathways to include commercial packaging as a requirement.

Who does this notice affect:

Importers of non-viable and wild rice for human consumption via the mail and passenger pathways, Inspections Group.

Background:

The department is currently reviewing the import conditions for commodities that are hosts of khapra beetle (Trogoderma granarium), to ensure that import conditions adequately mitigates potential risks of infestation.

Khapra beetle is a national priority pest for Australia. It is a destructive pest that can reproduce rapidly in stored products under hot conditions and is a significant biosecurity risk to Australia.
