Millet for human consumption

Effective from 29 October 2021

The department has updated the BICON case for millet for human consumption.

An import permit will now be required for all millet genera included in this case (Panicum spp., Pennisetum spp. and Setaria spp.).

Note: An import permit is only required for consignments that are exported on or after 29 October 2021.

Millet seeds must be non-viable prior to release from biosecurity control with one of the following measures:

  1. a successful germination testing result from a recognised laboratory (either onshore or offshore), or
  2. devitalisation treatment in Australia, for example:

    2.1. moist heat treatment at an AA class 4.1

    2.2. physical processing at an AA class 3.0.
