Information: Orchard control for persimmon fruit moth

Effective 3 August 2019 to 1 February 2020

The Japanese National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) has primary responsibility for ensuring that orchards are managed and maintained in a way that manages the quarantine risks of persimmon fruit moth (Stathmopoda masinissa).

Orchard control, visual inspection and remedial action is supported by:

  1. Visual inspection of each orchard by NPPO or approved officers to verify that requirements for Japanese persimmon to Australia are met.

  2. A final visual inspection of each orchard no more than two weeks before commencement of harvest to confirm absence of persimmon fruit moth and verify the effectiveness of orchard control measures.

  3. Exclusion of the orchard from export to Australia for that season where persimmon fruit moth is detected during the final orchard inspection.

If live persimmon fruit moth are detected on-arrival in Australia, the consignment will be re-exported, destroyed, or treated with an approved remedial action and the orchard that the non-compliant fruit was sourced from will be suspended from exporting to Australia. The NPPO will undertake an investigation of the pathway and once suitable corrective actions have been implemented and agreed to by the Department of Agriculture the suspension can be lifted.
