Coconut jelly:

• Coconut jelly is a soft, gelatinous material
  

• The pericarp (outer husk) is removed leaving only the flesh and shell.
  

Coconut apple:

• Coconut apple is the ball of sweet spongy white embryonic material that grows inside a maturing coconut.
  

• It provides sustenance to the developing embryo that sprouts through the coconut shell.
  

• The growing coconut apple fills the interior cavity of the coconut shell, replacing the coconut water as the coconut matures.
  

• The coconut apple is distinct from the layer of hard coconut meat that lines the inner surface of the shell.
  

• Coconut apple does not contain growing sprouts.
  

Prayer nuts

• May only contain a cone of husk that covers the three eyes on top of the coconut.
  

Immature coconuts

An example of one form of immature coconut.

The following characteristics may be used to determine immaturity:

• The coconut is full of fluid.
  

• The pericarp (outer husk) is soft and sappy, irrespective as to whether it is green, yellow or orange in colour.
  

• The flesh appears gelatinous (when the nut is opened) and not firm as in a normal, mature nut.
  

• The nut is incapable of germination.
