Veterinary certification requirements for the importation of primates from all countries

Effective 14 July 2015 to 30 October 2015

NOTE: Veterinary certificates are negotiated directly between relevant government authorities. In cases where a veterinary certificate has not been negotiated, this annex can be used as the basis for developing a suitable document.

  1. The premises of origin is a zoo, aquarium, scientific or other institution, approved, licensed or registered by the government of the exporting country to hold primates.

  2. The premises of origin is under veterinary supervision, where the health of the animal(s) is monitored so that incursions of disease are identified, and control and/or eradication measures can be applied. The premises of origin operates a documented animal health monitoring program which includes microbiological and parasitological tests and necropsies.

  3. The premises of origin is located in a country in which no case of yellow fever has been reported in the 12 months prior to certification.

  4. The animal(s) has been continuously resident in the premises of origin since birth or for the two years prior to shipment.

  5. The animal(s) for export is not wild caught.

  6. No case of tuberculosis (disease due to infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium bovis) has occurred in primates in the premises of origin during the five years prior to certification.

  7. Each animal for export has been individually identified with an International Standards Organisation (ISO) compliant microchip, and the microchip number and the site of implantation are recorded for each animal on the Veterinary Certificate.

  8. Each animal for export has been tested during the 12 months prior to export for tuberculosis, with negative results by:
    8.1. an intradermal tuberculin test using 0.1ml of mammalian old tuberculin, or
    8.2. bovine PPD tuberculin 0.1ml containing at least 50,000IU/ml, or
    8.3. by a comparative tuberculin test using 0.1ml of bovine PPD tuberculin containing at least 20,000 IU/ml in one site, and 0.1ml of avian PPD tuberculin containing at least 20,000U/ml in another site, or
    8.4. by gamma interferon assay (Primagam, CSL Ltd).
    Note:
    If any animal in the export consignment is positive for tuberculosis, none of the animals is eligible for import. Unweaned animals accompanying eligible dams are exempt from testing.

  9. The animal(s) for export has been kept in buildings and enclosures where there has been no case or other evidence of rabies, hepatitis B, measles, simian immunodeficiency syndrome or simian haemorrhagic fever in any animal, in the six months prior to certification.

  10. Each animal for export has been kept in isolation from other primates not of the same health status for at least 30 days immediately prior to the scheduled date of export, and has remained free from clinical signs of infectious or contagious disease until certification.

  11. Each animal for export has been treated with broad-spectrum parasiticides for internal and external parasites within 30 days immediately prior to export.

    Note: The dates of treatments, active ingredients and dose rates used are included in the health records which are attached to the Veterinary Certificate.

  12. Each animal for export has been examined by an official veterinarian within 48 hours prior to shipment and each animal was healthy, free from clinical signs of infectious or contagious disease, and fit for transport.

  13. After due enquiry, the official veterinarian is satisfied that the container for the transport was or was cleaned and disinfected prior to loading the animal. Containers constructed of timber were treated against insect infestation or fumigated prior to loading, as required by the Department of Agriculture.

  14. The animal(s) will be sealed into its travel crate prior to export using a tamper proof seal.
    Note:
    The seal number is recorded on the Veterinary Certificate.

  15. After due enquiry, the official veterinarian is satisfied that during transport, the animals will have no contact with other animals not of the same export consignment.
