Revised import conditions for Nuts for Human Consumption to take effect 30 May 2017

Effective from 24 May 2017

The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (the department) advises importers, customs brokers and regional officers that revised conditions for Nuts for human consumption will take effect from 30 May 2017.

Changes to the conditions for Nuts for human consumption include:

  • Raw almond nuts for human consumption case will be merged into the raw nuts for human consumption case.

  • Dried Apricot kernels will have the reference to human consumption removed and an information notice on why they are banned for sale as food.

  • The conditions for dried coconut will be moved into the dried fruit case, leaving the coconut case for fresh coconut conditions only.

Importers are reminded of their responsibility to ensure that imported consignments meet Australia’s import requirements, including freedom from pests of biosecurity concern.

This alert applies to the following cases:

  • Raw nuts for human consumption

  • Dried Apricot Kernels for human consumption

  • Raw almond nuts for human consumption

  • Coconut

  • Dried fruit

Background to the revised conditions

As part of a review (http://www.agriculture.gov.au/import/online-services/bicon/review-import-conditions) of all Australia’s import conditions, the department recently reviewed nuts for human consumption imports from all countries with a focus on the import requirements for whole raw nuts.
