The requirement for some zoo species to remain under quarantine surveillance after completing the mandatory quarantine isolation period has been removed to align with the new Biosecurity legislation which came into effect on 16 June 2016. Provided the import conditions are met, animals will be released from biosecurity control at the completion of their isolation period.

Prior to this change, zoos importing primates, amphibians, carnivores, felidae, marsupials and reptiles were required to notify the department of any signs of sickness, death or intended transfer of the imported animal. Although this requirement has been removed from import conditions, zoos must still comply with any reporting requirements under their licence and registration. Where necessary, the department may use other powers under the Biosecurity Act to manage the biosecurity risks of any imported animal.
