Upcoming consolidation of suspended nursery stock BICON cases

Effective from 23 July 2024

The department has reviewed the below listed BICON cases for nursery stock which have historically been suspended from trade due to inactivity (no recent trade) and/or changes in the associated biosecurity risks. To consolidate and manage these pathways, Plant Import Operations will develop a new BICON case ‘Nursery stock species requiring and import condition review’ and subsequent existing suspended nursery stock cases will be made inactive.

Scientific names associated to this new BICON case will require an import condition review prior to conditions being re-established. A review of import conditions may be conducted by the department upon request, subject to resource availability. The department recommends that proposals to review import conditions are submitted with support from relevant Australian industry bodies to enable prioritisation by the department.

Who does this notice affect:
Departmental staff, nursery stock importers (and their customs brokers) and industry groups who may be interested in importing scientific names associated with the below list of BICON cases:

  • Agathis spp. (kauri, dammar) for use as nursery stock
  • Annona spp. for use as nursery stock
  • Azadirachta indica for use as nursery stock
  • Berberis, Mahonia and Mahoberberis for use as nursery stock
  • Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum hosts for use as nursery stock
  • Juniperus spp. for use as nursery stock
  • Myrtus spp. for use as nursery stock
  • Spiraea spp. for use as nursery stock
  • Teak for use as nursery stock
  • Vangueria infausta for use as nursery stock

Import permits:
There are no import permits impacted by this change.
