Changes to permitted live freshwater ornamental fish species list

Effective from 19 April 2024

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has recently updated the list of permitted live freshwater ornamental fish. This updated list can be found on our website.

As a result of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water updating the ‘list of specimens taken to be suitable for live import’ to include additional rainbow fish species, we have determined that the biosecurity risks associated with these new species can be managed under the current freshwater fish permit conditions.

Therefore, our updates have included the addition of:

  • 23 new rainbowfish species
  • 25 reclassified species.

As of 1 November 2023 the list of permitted live freshwater and marine ornamental fish was removed from the appendix of import permits moving forward. If your current permit still contains ‘Appendix 3: List: Permitted live freshwater/marine ornamental fish suitable for import’ your permit will remain valid until the date specified on the permit.

Who does this alert affect:
Departmental staff and Australian importers of live freshwater ornamental fish.
