Update to the commodity description for the importation of fresh unprocessed garlic bulbs

Effective from 10 July 2023

The commodity description for the importation of fresh unprocessed garlic bulbs for human consumption will be updated to clarify the forms of fresh unprocessed garlic bulbs permitted to be imported.

Permitted forms of fresh garlic bulbs include cured bulbs with a dry, papery outer skin or loose unpeeled cloves with a dry skin. Fresh garlic bulbs that are not cured are not permitted.

Guidance material will be available in the BICON case for fresh unprocessed garlic bulbs for human consumption.

Import permits will be varied to include the commodity description. Importers will not incur costs associated with varying the permit.

Who does this alert affect:
Importers of fresh unprocessed garlic bulbs from all countries, brokers and Pathway Cargo Operations - Assessments and Inspections.

Further information:
Prior to the importation of goods into Australia, a valid import permit issued by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is required.

An import permit may be obtained by submitting an import permit application to the department (if viewed online, use the 'Apply Now' button at the bottom of the BICON case).
