On 1 August 2022 the following changes will be published to the Genetic material (nucleic acids and their derivatives) excluding plants and plant pathogens BICON case:

• Content will be updated to clarify that both genetic material derived from or homologous to sequences from specified organisms is permitted. This will ensure importers have a clear pathway for information on, and to apply for import permits for, synthetically produced genetic material.

The following standard permit conditions will be updated as follows:

• Genetic material derived from multicellular organisms (including listed vectors) will be updated to ensure consignment-specific evidence can clearly demonstrate adherence to conditions.

• Genetic material purified and derived from microorganisms and viruses (excluding listed species) will be updated as follows:

  1. To allow for genetic material homologous to sequences from permitted species.
  2. Removal of in-permit reference to excluded species, instead referring to pathogen lists published on the department’s website and Department of Health and Aged Care’s website.
  3. Updates to consignment-specific evidence requirements to ensure clear demonstration of adherence to conditions.

What does this mean for you?
There is no action required from current permit holders. The department will not be amending current active import permits unless permit holders apply to vary their import permit via their BICON account (fees apply) to request the updated conditions.

Any applications submitted before 1 August 2022 that include the above standard permits will be processed as applied for. Applications submitted after this date will no-longer have those options available.
