Invocation of the Contingency Import Policy for Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) Chicken Eggs

Effective from 18 May 2022

The Department of Agriculture, Water, and the Environment (the department) has invoked the Contingency Import Policy for SPF Chicken Eggs (the policy). The policy provides a pathway for the importation of non-Australian SPF eggs under biosecurity conditions during periods of critical national need.

Relevant BICON cases have been updated, as required, to facilitate the submission of import permit applications to import SPF eggs into Australia.

Background:
Availability of SPF eggs in Australia is critical to certain human and veterinary enterprises, including disease diagnosis, biomedical research, biosecurity surveillance, and production of some vaccines.

The policy also supports the offshore production and importation of veterinary vaccines using non-Australian origin SPF eggs.

Who does this alert affect:
Departmental staff and Australian entities reliant upon a supply of SPF eggs for their ongoing enterprise.
