Outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Germany

Effective from 30 March 2020

The country list for avian fluids and tissues has been updated due to Australia being notified of a confirmed outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Germany.

As a result of the outbreak, avian fluids and tissues from Germany will no longer meet current import requirements and therefore will be considered to pose a biosecurity risk.

Avian fluids and tissues from Germany must now be sourced between 11 August 2017 and 28 February 2020 (inclusive). Goods not sourced within this timeframe will not be permitted entry unless treated upon arrival.

HPAI is not present in Australia and the introduction of this disease would have serious economic consequences for Australia’s avian industry. HPAI virus can infect many species of domestic and wild birds.

Who does this alert affect:
Importers of avian fluids and tissues imported for in vitro use (or in vivo use in laboratory organisms), Assessment Services Group and Client Contact Group.
