Whole farmed barramundi (Lates calcarifer) is no longer permitted from the Philippines

Effective from 16 January 2020

The Philippines government has suspended the export approval of whole farmed barramundi (Lates calcarifer) from the Philippines. The department understands that there is no existing trade is this product currently and as such impact is expected to be minimal. The department has contacted permit holders individually about any administrative changes to import permits that are needed.

The following barramundi product may still be imported:

  • De-headed, de-gilled and eviscerated farmed barramundi – no import permit required

  • Consumer ready barramundi – no import permit required*

  • Wild caught barramundi that has been de-gilled and eviscerated - import permit required

*A consumer-ready product is defined as a product that is ready for the householder to cook/consume, and includes:

  • cutlets (including the central bone and external skin, and excluding fins), each weighing no more than 450 grams, or

  • skinless fillets (excluding the belly flap and all bone except the pin bones) of any weight, or

  • skin-on fillets (excluding the belly flap and all bones except the pin bones) each weighing no more than 450 grams, or

  • eviscerated, headless ‘pan-size’ fish, each weighing no more than 450 grams, or

  • fish that is headless and eviscerated which has been salted, dried or smoked, of any weight, or

  • Products that are processed further than the stage described in points (1) to (5), including commercially canned products.
