The department has written to trading partners to seek their assurance that they can comply with the new import conditions for salmon that came into effect on the 1st of September 2019. As of the 18th of September the following countries have advised they can comply with the new import conditions:

Source countries: Australia, Canada, Denmark, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

Processing countries: Canada, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

This BICON case contains pathways for the all of the countries that have previously had approval to export salmon to Australia, however trade cannot occur until each of these countries has confirmed they can meet the new import conditions. This notice will be updated as the remaining countries confirm they can meet the new import conditions.

All non-compliant product, including product that is accompanied by incorrect health certification, must be re-exported or destroyed. Product with a bill of lading dated prior to 1 September 2019 will be processed against the previous import conditions.

New Zealand is not affected by these changes, trade in salmon from New Zealand can continue using the existing conditions.
