Revised import conditions for Laboratory materials

Effective from 19 July 2019

A review has been completed for the BICON commodity case: Laboratory materials, which will result in changes to import conditions.

The revised case is expected to be published in BICON on 26 August 2019.

Who does this alert affect:
Importers of Laboratory materials, Assessment Services Group and Inspections Group.

Background:
The pathways (questions and answers) in the new BICON case for this commodity type will be streamlined and simplified. The new case will ask users to select one of the following options:

  • Purified laboratory reagents, toxins and venoms
The standard permit for purified toxins and venoms will be combined with the standard permit for purified laboratory reagents, so that only one permit case is required for these goods.

Evidence is now required to demonstrate that products imported under the standard permit meet the import conditions.

  • Only contains approved ingredients
The list of approved ingredients that can be imported without an import permit has been updated to align with Section 36 of the Biosecurity (Prohibited and Conditionally Non-prohibited Goods Determination) 2016.

  • Other
Addition of a product questionnaire to the ‘Other’ pathway to provide importers with the information needed to be provided with an application for a non-standard permit.

Links to alternative BICON cases that may be applicable to the goods to be imported will be provided.
