Scientific name corrections for plant species listed in BICON
Effective from 23 July 2019The Department of Agriculture and has made corrections to the spelling of scientific names for a range of plant species in BICON.
The scientific name changes to species are listed in Table 1.
Who does this notice affect:
Importers of plant material (nursery stock and seeds for sowing), brokers and Assessment Services Group ans Inspections Group.
Import Permits:
Import permits have not been varied to reflect these spelling changes, as a number of these species are not believed to be commonly imported.
Any importer who has concerns about their existing import permit containing one of these species, may request a variation of their import permit. Please contact the department via email at imports@agriculture.gov.au (Please include the following in the title of the email - “Scientific name change – Plant T2”).
Background:
Plant Imports Operations are undertaking reviews of scientific names in BICON, to validate listed names. The review is being completed in stages, with this update covering species from H-Z. Any further changes to scientific names will be advised through an additional BICON notification.

- Mangifera spp. for use as nursery stock
- Moko hosts seed for sowing
- Forestry or amenity species that are hosts of Xylella fastidiosa
- Sudden oak death hosts for use as nursery stock
- Mangifera spp. seed for sowing
- Palm seed for sowing
- Bulbs that are hosts of Xylella fastidiosa for growth in open quarantine
- Aquatic plants for use as nursery stock
- Ornamental virus, Sudden Oak Death and Xylella fastidiosa hosts for use as nursery stock
- Cacti for use as nursery stock
- Conifer (excluding Pinus spp. and Pseudotsuga spp.) seed for sowing
