Revised import conditions for Bee products

Effective from 16 May 2019

A review has been completed for bee pollen.

The revised case is expected to be published in BICON on 1 July 2019.

Who does this alert affect:
Importers of bee pollen for all uses other than animal consumption, bioremedial or fertiliser use or for growing purposes.

Background:
The department has finalised a review of bee pollen. As a result of the review some changes have been made. These changes include:

The ‘bee pollen or powder’ pathway in the BICON commodity case Bee products will be split into two

  • Bee pollen – gamma irradiation required (either onshore or offshore at an approved facility), including capsules, tablets, powder, granules

  • Bee pollen – heat treated and retail packaged, capsules and tablets only

An import permit will still be required.

Phytosanitary certificates attesting to gamma irradiation treatment of bee pollen will no longer be accepted. For goods that have undergone gamma irradiation offshore, a gamma irradiation certificate from an approved offshore facility will be required. There are no changes to import conditions for pollen that will be gamma irradiated onshore.

A standard permit has been developed for bee pollen capsules and tablets. The import conditions include the requirement that the bee pollen has undergone a heat treatment and is a fully finished, retail packaged product.

Standard permits are permits with established pre-assessed conditions. If the goods cannot meet the conditions or if the importer prefers to have product names listed on the import permit they will need to apply for a permit in the ‘Other’ pathway.
