Documentation Requirements

The information below describes the requirements for documentation presented to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to support the risk assessment of imported goods.

CITES tag

At tag attached to goods (that are monitored through CITES) that have been given approval to be traded between countries.

  1. Complete - All prescribed information required to be on a document must be present and complete. Additional prescribed information below:

    The tags must conform to CITES standards include the below requirements:

    1. non-reusable tags

    2. the ISO two-letter code for the country of origin

    3. a unique serial identification number

    4. a standard species code

    5. the year of skin production or harvest

    6. be tamper-resistant

    7. a self-locking mechanism

    8. be heat resistance

    9. be inertia to chemical and mechanical processing

    10. alphanumeric information (which may include bar-coding) applied by permanent stamping

    11. the year of skin production or harvest and serial number be separated with a hyphen (-) where the

    12. information on tags appears in the sequence: country of origin, year of skin production or harvest, serial number, species code

  2. Legible - All prescribed information required to be on a document must be legible.

  3. Free from erasures and alterations - All prescribed information on the document must be free from erasures and alterations unless endorsed by the issuer of the document. The only acceptable endorsement is a company stamp or seal signed by the company employee (including printed name) or a government stamp or seal signed by a government employee (including printed name) applied adjacent to the alteration.
