Sphagnum moss Changes

This case describes the requirements for the importation of sphagnum moss for all uses other than animal foods, fertilisers or for growing purposes. Sphagnum moss is dried plant material used in the floral industry and nurseries to make wreaths, basket liners, water retention matting or for use in seed raising mixes. Sphagnum liquid waste absorbent is used for the cleanup of hazardous waste. The product consists of processed and dehydrated sphagnum moss that is often imported bagged, baled or as booms.

This case describes the import requirements for permitted of Agathis species as nursery stock. Note: The importation of Agathis spp. from New Zealand is not permitted due to serious disease risk posed by the pathogen Phytophthora agathidicida (previously known as Phytophthora taxon Agathis). All permitted Agathis spp. nursery stock requires an import permit prior to importation into Australia. Tissue cultures and the media they are grown in must be free of visible contamination, require phytosanitary certification and be inspected prior to release from biosecurity control. Tissue cultures may be imported without media from a department approved source. All other plant material will require inspection, treatment and a minimum 3 months growth period the government’s post-entry quarantine facility or a private approved arrangement site where it will be screened for disease. Maize grits for human consumption or processing

This case describes the requirements for import of maize grits (or broken corn) for human consumption, or further processing into either food or for alcohol production. The goods must be commercially prepared and packaged. Maize grits (or broken corn) may range in size from granules less than 3mm or degermed kernels or granules greater than 3mm but less than full kernels. Corn cob articles being imported not for human consumption should be assessed under the Permitted plant fibres BICON case.

Actinidia spp. (kiwi fruit, gooseberry) for use as nursery stock Alerts

This case describes the import requirements for permitted Actinidia spp. as nursery stock. All permitted Actinidia spp. nursery stock requires an import permit prior to importation into Australia. Tissue cultures and the media they are grown in will be inspected for visible contamination, require phytosanitary certification and a minimum 6 months growth period at the government’s post-entry quarantine facility where they will be screened for disease. Dormant budwood will require inspection, chemical treatment and a minimum 12 months growth period at the government’s post-entry quarantine facility where it will be screened for disease.
