Dried herb products not for human consumption Alerts

This case describes the requirements for the importation of dried herb products. Importation is permitted for all end uses other than for human consumption, animal foods, fertilisers, growing purposes, bioremediation and veterinary therapeutic use. Products may be individual leaves (not bunches of leaves attached to the stem/branch/vine), flowers (not on stems), stems, roots, gums, resins, rhizomes, spices and crushed nut shells. These must be thoroughly dried, broken into small pieces and not capable of propagation. This case does not apply to, fruit or bark. Herbarium specimens

This case describes the requirements for the importation of non-infected and infected herbarium specimens of vascular plants, and non-vascular plants and fungi (including algae, lichens, mosses, liverworts and hornworts). Herbarium specimens are processed (e.g. dried, mounted, preserved) plant samples that are labelled with their collection data. These goods are for use in herbarium reference collections, for example, institutes listed in the Index Herbariorum. The department strongly encourages importers of herbarium specimens to transport the specimens via courier. This allows importers to monitor the movement and receipt of the goods throughout the import pathway, which may not be possible through the mail system.

Cacti for use as nursery stock

This case describes the requirements for the importation of species of cacti plants and tissue cultures. All plant material requires an import permit prior to importation into Australian territory. Tissue cultures must have root or callus development, be free of visible contamination, require phytosanitary certification and inspection prior to release from biosecurity control. Other plant material will require an inspection, fumigation and a minimum 3 months growth period in quarantine at an approved arrangement site for visual disease screening. Unrooted grafted cacti plants from Korea may be imported under an approved system that requires inspection and treatment overseas, to ensure freedom from pathogens and pests of concern. Following inspection in Australia these cacti may be released from biosecurity control without the need for post entry quarantine.
