Coir peat

This case describes the requirements for the importation of coir peat for use in the horticulture industry as a growth medium (e.g. coir peat plugs, inserts and pots), mulch or fertiliser. Coir peat is derived from the fibrous husk of the coconut and is typically imported in compressed bricks or bales. This case also describes conditions for coir peat products with additives, these commodities present a different risk and require an import permit.

Processed and dried hops for human consumption and processing Alerts

This case describes the requirements for the importation of processed hops, dried hops for human consumption or hops intended for processing such as alcohol production. Hops are the female flower clusters of the species Humulus lupulus. Processed hops may come in the form of hop pellets or hop extracts, whereas unprocessed hops or dried hops may come in the form of hop cones or hop plugs.

Highly processed tallow derivatives Alerts

This case describes the requirements for the importation of animal-derived, highly processed tallow derivatives for all end uses (excluding stockfeed) and goods containing highly processed tallow derivatives (with or without plant extracts/oils) as the only ingredients of biological origin. Highly processed tallow derivatives, such as glycerol, fatty acids, stearates and salts, are processed using trans-esterification or hydrolysis at 200°C for at least 20 minutes under pressure or saponification with 12M sodium hydroxide (95°C for at least 3 hours for batch processing or 140°C under pressure for at least 8 minutes for continuous processing). Importers seeking to bring tallow derivatives into Australia to be fed to stock animals including ruminants, poultry, pigs, horses, aquatic animals and bees should consult the case ‘Stockfeed, stockfeed ingredients and stockfeed additives’.

Bovine embryos Changes

This case describes the requirements for the importation of bovine embryos for artificial reproductive purposes. Donor species are limited to Bos taurus or Bos indicus. All approved countries can import in vivo derived embryos. In vitro derived bovine embryos can currently only be imported from Canada, New Zealand and the United States of America.

This case describes the requirements for the importation of unretorted animal based flavours or floss. Animal based flavours include soups, curry mixes, stock cubes, gravy powder and noodle flavours. This case applies to importation of heat processed animal based flavours or floss containing meat derived from mammals, birds or reptiles. This case does not apply to animal based flavours or floss derived from fish (including both teleost and cartilaginous fish), crustaceans (including prawns), molluscs and aquatic animals. Ship or aircraft stores for transhipment

This case describes the requirements to allow the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (the department) to monitor the content, and control the movement, of transhipped ship’s stores and aircraft stores for use on cruise and commercial vessels. Note: This case does not apply to ship/aircraft spares. Ship/aircraft spares are defined as “parts or accessories that are required for the maintenance or general operation of a vessel”. Examples of ship/aircraft spares include engines or engine components, seals, bearings, lubricants, new filters, o-rings etc. These items are generally not derived from, nor contain, animal or plant products. However, if ship/aircraft spares do contain components of biosecurity or are used spare parts, then consignments must be referred to the department for assessment.

Noodles for human consumption

This case describes the requirements for the importation of noodles for human consumption only. This case may include items such as pasta, spaghetti, egg noodles, commercially packaged noodles or instant noodles. Please note that this case applies to noodles derived from plant material only and noodles containing egg. If you are importing a composite product that includes ingredients other than egg, you must search BICON for each individual ingredient to determine the conditions that apply. For food products including pasta and noodles containing equal to or greater than 10% egg (excluding meat) refer to the BICON case Egg and egg products for human consumption.
