Starter cultures (and derivatives)

This case describes the requirements for the importation of starter cultures (and derivatives) for human food, beverage, human therapeutic and cosmetic use only. Note that import conditions in this case are also applicable to primary derivatives e.g. antigens, proteins, genetic material. For the import of in vitro laboratory work or in vivo work in laboratory animals, please refer to the BICON case Microorganisms. Please note that this case only applies to the starter culture component of composite products. If you are importing a composite product, you must search BICON for each individual ingredient to determine the conditions that apply.

Maize for human consumption or processing Alerts

This case describes the requirements for import of bagged and containerised whole raw maize kernels, corn seeds, maize grits, broken corn and degermed maize kernels for human consumption or further processing into either food such as popped corns or for alcohol production. The goods must be commercially prepared and packaged. Maize grits or broken corn may range in size from granules less than 3mm or degermed kernels or granules greater than 3mm, but less than full kernels. Highly processed maize product such as corn flour should be assessed under Processed grain and seed products for human consumption. Corn cob articles being imported not for human consumption should be assessed under the Permitted plant fibres BICON case.

Highly processed tallow derivatives

This case describes the requirements for the importation of animal-derived, highly processed tallow derivatives for all end uses (excluding stockfeed) and goods containing highly processed tallow derivatives (with or without plant extracts/oils) as the only ingredients of biological origin. Highly processed tallow derivatives, such as glycerol, fatty acids, stearates and salts, are processed using trans-esterification or hydrolysis at 200°C for at least 20 minutes under pressure or saponification with 12M sodium hydroxide (95°C for at least 3 hours for batch processing or 140°C under pressure for at least 8 minutes for continuous processing). Importers seeking to bring tallow derivatives into Australia to be fed to stock animals including ruminants, poultry, pigs, horses, aquatic animals and bees should consult the case ‘Stockfeed, stockfeed ingredients and stockfeed additives’.
