This case describes the requirements for the import of test kits, including diagnostic test kits. Diagnostic test kits included in this case may be imported to diagnose conditions in humans, animals and the environment. Test kits covered by this case include those testing for: pathogens (e.g. viruses, bacterial, prions) substances (e.g. drugs, chemicals) conditions (e.g. vitamins, minerals, pregnancy, hormone levels) environmental conditions. Diagnostic test kits may also be known as in-vitro diagnostics (IVDs). Test kits may also be known by the technique they employ, such as, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) kits, or enzyme linked immunoassays (ELISA) kits.

Coir peat

This case describes the requirements for the importation of coir peat for use in the horticulture industry as a growth medium (e.g. coir peat plugs, inserts and pots), mulch or fertiliser. Coir peat is derived from the fibrous husk of the coconut and is typically imported in compressed bricks or bales. This case also describes conditions for coir peat products with additives, these commodities present a different risk and require an import permit.

Plant material embedded in a solid medium

Effective 13 October 2023 to present

This case describes the requirements for the importation of plant products that are embedded in a solid medium. Plant material embedded in plastic includes plant materials, wood or bamboo that have been fully embedded (that is, not capable of free movement) in a solid medium that is impervious to air and liquid. Plant or plant parts with soil attached are permitted, providing the soil is fully embedded. Acceptable embedding media include catalysed hard plastics and hard silicones, fibreglass, resin, or similar compounds which have been fully sealed around the plant material using heat, moulding or chemical processes. Plant material embedded in plastic does not include plant materials, timber or bamboo that have been surface coated with a laminate, lacquer, paint, stain or items that have been wrapped in other materials. It further does not include engineered or impregnated wood or plant products such as plywood, veneer, compressed agricultural waste/wood products and reconstituted wood or wood plastics.

Actinidia spp. (kiwi fruit, gooseberry) for use as nursery stock

This case describes the import requirements for permitted Actinidia spp. as nursery stock. All permitted Actinidia spp. nursery stock requires an import permit prior to importation into Australia. Tissue cultures and the media they are grown in will be inspected for visible contamination, require phytosanitary certification and a minimum 6 months growth period at the government’s post-entry quarantine facility where they will be screened for disease. Dormant budwood will require inspection, chemical treatment and a minimum 12 months growth period at the government’s post-entry quarantine facility where it will be screened for disease.
