This case describes the requirements for the importation of live animals and their reproductive material for laboratory purposes only. Laboratory animals covered by this case include amphibians and their eggs for hatching, aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, arthropods, fish, freshwater snails, guinea pigs, rats and mice and their reproductive material such as embryos, ova and semen.

Powdered plant products for human consumption

The case describes the requirements for the importation of powdered plant products for human consumption. Powdered plant products consist of dried and ground or granulated plant parts (including fruits, herbs, bark and roots). Human consumption includes uses such as food, supplements, complementary medicines, cosmetics or smoking. Cacti for use as nursery stock

This case describes the requirements for the importation of species of cacti plants and tissue cultures. All plant material requires an import permit prior to importation into Australian territory. Tissue cultures must have root or callus development, be free of visible contamination, require phytosanitary certification and inspection prior to release from biosecurity control. Other plant material will require an inspection, fumigation and a minimum 3 months growth period in quarantine at an approved arrangement site for visual disease screening. Unrooted grafted cacti plants from Korea may be imported under an approved system that requires inspection and treatment overseas, to ensure freedom from pathogens and pests of concern. Following inspection in Australia these cacti may be released from biosecurity control without the need for post entry quarantine.

Herbarium specimens

This case describes the requirements for the importation of non-infected and infected herbarium specimens of vascular plants, and non-vascular plants and fungi (including algae, lichens, mosses, liverworts and hornworts). Herbarium specimens are processed (e.g. dried, mounted, preserved) plant samples that are labelled with their collection data. These goods are for use in herbarium reference collections, for example, institutes listed in the Index Herbariorum. The department strongly encourages importers of herbarium specimens to transport the specimens via courier. This allows importers to monitor the movement and receipt of the goods throughout the import pathway, which may not be possible through the mail system.

Dried herbs for human consumption

This case describes the requirements for the importation of dried herbs. Importation is permitted for human consumption and human therapeutics. This includes pods without seeds, citrus peel, leaves, flowers, stems, roots, gums, resins, rhizomes, spices and crushed nut shells that are thoroughly dried and not capable of propagation. This case describes the requirements for the importation of firewood, pellets, briquettes, agglomerated logs made out of extruded, pressed and pelletised sawdust, wood powder or wood shavings. This case also applies to fully carbonised charcoal in all forms made from wood or other plant material.
