Biodegradable urns Alerts

This case describes the requirements for the importation of biodegradable urns for human, or animal, remains. Biodegradable urns can be made from rice husks, coir peat, sphagnum, wood pulp and other plant materials that pose a biosecurity risk. Urns must be manufactured in a way that will reduce the biosecurity risk or be subject to mandatory treatment. These conditions do not apply to urns made from bioplastics such as starch derivatives or cellulose.

This case describes the import requirements for permitted of Agathis species as nursery stock. Note: The importation of Agathis spp. from New Zealand is not permitted due to serious disease risk posed by the pathogen Phytophthora agathidicida (previously known as Phytophthora taxon Agathis). All permitted Agathis spp. nursery stock requires an import permit prior to importation into Australia. Tissue cultures and the media they are grown in must be free of visible contamination, require phytosanitary certification and be inspected prior to release from biosecurity control. Tissue cultures may be imported without media from a department approved source. All other plant material will require inspection, treatment and a minimum 3 months growth period the government’s post-entry quarantine facility or a private approved arrangement site where it will be screened for disease. This case describes the requirements to allow the Department of Agriculture (the department) to monitor the content, and control the movement, of transhipped ship’s stores and aircraft stores for use on cruise and commercial vessels. Note: This case does not apply to ship/aircraft spares. Ship/aircraft spares are defined as “parts or accessories that are required for the maintenance or general operation of a vessel”. Examples of ship/aircraft spares include engines or engine components, seals, bearings, lubricants, new filters, o-rings etc. These items are generally not derived from, nor contain, animal or plant products. However, if ship/aircraft spares do contain components of biosecurity or are used spare parts, then consignments must be referred to the department for assessment.

Maize grits for human consumption or processing Alerts

This case describes the requirements for import of maize grits (or broken corn) for human consumption, or further processing into either food or for alcohol production. The goods must be commercially prepared and packaged. Maize grits (or broken corn) may range in size from granules less than 3mm or degermed kernels or granules greater than 3mm but less than full kernels. Corn cob articles being imported not for human consumption should be assessed under the Permitted plant fibres BICON case.
