Cacti for use as nursery stock Alerts Changes

This case describes the requirements for the importation of species of cacti plants and tissue cultures. All plant material requires an import permit prior to importation into Australian territory. Tissue cultures must be free of visible contamination, require phytosanitary certification and inspection prior to release from biosecurity control. Other plant material will require an inspection, fumigation and a minimum 3 months growth period in quarantine at an approved arrangement site for visual disease screening. Unrooted grafted cacti plants from Korea may be imported under an approved system that requires inspection and treatment overseas, to ensure freedom from pathogens and pests of concern. Following inspection in Australia these cacti may be released from biosecurity control without the need for post entry quarantine.

Biodegradable plant pots Alerts Changes

This case describes the requirements for the importation of biodegradable plant pots for use as fertiliser. For coir fibre liners for hanging baskets, please see the Permitted plant fibres case. Biodegradable plant pots can be made from rice husks, coir peat, sphagnum, wood pulp, coconut fibre and other plant materials that pose a biosecurity risk. Pots must be manufactured in a way that will reduce the biosecurity risk or be subject to mandatory treatment. These conditions do not apply to pots made from bioplastics such as starch derivatives or cellulose.

Other plant material will require inspection, fumigation and a minimum 3 months growth period in quarantine at an approved arrangement site for visual disease screening. Dormant Zantedeschia tubers from approved countries may be imported under an approved system that requires inspection overseas to verify freedom from pathogens of concern. Tubers must be treated for insects, and following inspection and treatment, may be released from biosecurity control without the need for post entry quarantine. This case describes the import requirements for permitted of Agathis species as nursery stock. Note: The importation of Agathis spp. from New Zealand is not permitted due to serious disease risk posed by the pathogen Phytophthora agathidicida (previously known as Phytophthora taxon Agathis). All permitted Agathis spp. nursery stock requires an import permit prior to importation into Australia. Tissue cultures and the media they are grown in must be free of visible contamination, require phytosanitary certification and be inspected prior to release from biosecurity control. Tissue cultures may be imported without media from a department approved source. All other plant material will require inspection, treatment and a minimum 3 months growth period the government’s post-entry quarantine facility or a private approved arrangement site where it will be screened for disease.
