Import conditions prior to arrival in Australian territory

1. Prior to the importation of goods into Australian territory, a valid import permit issued by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is required.

   An import permit may be obtained by submitting an import permit application to the department (use the 'Apply Now' button at the bottom of this page).

Important reminder to importers

Goods that require a valid import permit, but arrive without one, including where an import permit application is currently under consideration, will be directed for export from Australian territory or required to be destroyed in an approved manner.

2. For the biosecurity risks associated with the commodity, the following biosecurity management measures are required:

   1. heat treatment at 85°C for 48 hours or 95°C for 24 hours (offshore or onshore), or
   2. gamma irradiation at 25 kGy (onshore), or
   3. steam pelleting (offshore).

3. Consignments of non-pelletised poppy straw imported as high value freight must be accompanied by phytosanitary certificate with the following additional declaration:

   “Representative samples were inspected and found free from evidence of any species of Trogoderma (whether live, dead or exuviae) in Australia’s list of Trogoderma species of biosecurity concern”.

4. It is the importer's responsibility to identify and to ensure it has complied with all requirements of any other regulatory and advisory bodies prior to and after importation. Importers may also require other permits and/or licences from the Office of Drug Control, Department of Health and Aged Care, Therapeutic Goods Administration, local and/or state governments.
